Voters First Amendment Backers Approach July 4th Deadline

The Voters First amendment would create a 12 member citizens commission to draw the boundaries for districts for Congress and for the state House and Senate – right now the maps are drawn by elected lawmakers of the two major political parties. And that’s one reason why Kevin Knedler with the Libertarian Party of Ohio is supporting the Voters First petition drive.

KNEDLER: “We have fought three federal court battles just to get on the ballot in Ohio. Very entrenched parties here in Ohio. And we saw this as an opportunity to stand up and say, you know, we need to put the voters first.”

Voters First Chair Catherine Turcer says the coalition is pushing toward an Independence Day filing deadline for this year’s ballot.

TURCER: “The signatures don’t go bad. You know, you just file later. Now that is not our plan. Our plan is to actually do our filing on the Fourth of July.”

The group has just days to file 386-thousand signatures – along with at least a hundred thousand extra to cover those that are thrown out.
