Early Mosquitoes May Not Result In More West Nile Virus Cases

Ohio is bracing for yet another year of West Nile Virus. It’s a disease that is spread to humans by the bites of infected mosquitoes. The unusually warm spring weather has meant an earlier-than-usual appearance of mosquitoes, but the top bug expert at the Ohio Health Department says that doesn’t necessarily mean there will be an upsurge in the number of human cases of West Nile.
Bug expert Richard Gary says these “early” mosquitoes are not the ones that tend to carry the potentially deadly virus.
Health officials from across the state will soon be testing samples of mosquitoes to see how many may be carrying the West Nile virus.
