For more than a quarter century, Great Lakes Theater has staged its adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol here in Playhouse Square. During that time, Great Lakes' education department has also staged a writing contest among middle-school children from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. This year, hundreds of students wrote their own original stories based on Dickens' tale, and nine of those students became this year's grand-prize winners. Yamaiya Jackson is a seventh grader at The Whitney M. Young Gifted and Talented Leadership Academy. Her winning tale is "The Christmas Carol: In the Eyes of the Black Beings." Here's a part of her play presented by actress Laura Berg.

Music is a joyous part of the holiday season. Recently, our sister station, WCLV Classical 104.9, took over the Gund Studio inside Idea Center at Playhouse Square. The occasion was a live broadcast of the second annual Baldwin Wallace Men's Chorus holiday concert - and we captured that performance with our ideastream cameras.

One of the most talked-about elements around the water cooler when fans discuss the popular PBS show Downton Abbey is the clothes. A century ago, when those Victorian garments were in fashion, they were a hit with an aspiring fashion designer - Charles James, our country's first couturier. We have a look at a retrospective of his work from our affiliate KUHT for this edition of Applause America.
