This year, 90.3 WCPN ideastream turns 30! A few weeks ago we received an unexpected gift that now hangs in the hallway of the Idea Center. It was produced by an artist working for the WPA, the Depression-era job agency created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The gift is a colorful, mural-sized painting that also serves as a history lesson. The panels of this work by artist Louis Grebenak reveal the story of educational radio station WBOE, which later became northeast Ohio’s NPR station 90.3 WCPN.

Ever since 90.3 WCPN took to the airwaves in 1984, music has been a regular part of our programming. Today, that commitment continues with shows like Jazz with Bob Parloccha, and on The Sound of Applause, heard Monday through Thursday at 2 p.m. Recently, Cleveland native Vanessa Rubin, a well-respected jazz vocalist who was back home for a concert at Nighttown and she visited our KeyBank Studio with pianist Helen Sung and showed off her skills with music.

The City of Cleveland has been given the green light for a multi-million dollar renovation of Public Square, with a completion deadline of 2016 in time for the Republican National Convention. In the upcoming WVIZ/PBS documentary, Downtown Cleveland - which airs Friday, November 7th at 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 9th at 3:00 p.m., we explore some of the private stories behind many of the public spaces in downtown Cleveland - including Public Square.Albert Albano, Intermuseum Conservation Association
